Vilnius Art in Museums. 1939 - 1944

VILNIUS ART IN MUSEUMS. 1939-1944
Integration of artworks by Vilnius' artists into Lithuanian national art collections during 1939-1944

The exhibition Vilnius Art in Museums. 1939-1944 invites visitors to get acquainted with the latest art historical research on the processes of formation of the national art heritage during the Second World War. The exhibition focuses on the two largest state art collections in Vilnius and Kaunas. The works and documentary material on display reveal the strategies used by Lithuanian museum professionals to preserve cultural heritage during the Soviet and Nazi occupations. The exhibition also expands the contexts of the NGA's main exhibition, Vilnius, Wilno, Vilne 1918-1948, to broaden knowledge of the integration of interwar Vilnius artworks into the Lithuanian national art collections during the war. Some of these works are presented in this exhibition for the first time after more than eighty years in the darkness of the storage rooms.
