Elena Urbaitytė-Urbaitis

Elena Urbaitytė-Urbaitis: Choices.

Testimonies of Time: Kazys Daugėla, Jonas Mekas, Algimantas Kezys

The exhibition 'Elena Urbaitytė-Urbaitis: Choices. Testimonies of Time: Kazys Daugėla, Jonas Mekas, Algimantas Kezys', was held to mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of Elena Urbaitytė-Urbaitis (1922-2006). This exhibition presented the first comprehensive overview of the development of the artist's work, and its historical context, the creative explorations she pursued in interwar Lithuania, postwar Europe, and New York from the 1950s to the 1990s, as well as the late works she created in Lithuania after the reestablishment of independence.

The exhibition's title Choices signifies the world-view and creative choices that the artist had to make in the face of the 20th century's dramatic historical cataclysms. These include her flight to the West in 1944, the loss of her home and her family, and difficulties in settling and living abroad. Her creative choices cover her artistic explorations, fusing together the principles of Cézannesque Post-Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art, which examined the consumer society, and Op Art, Analytical Cubism, Constructivism and Minimalism, adding a third spatial and sculptural dimension to traditional painting in her mature creative period.
